Azeitão is a charming village, being above all a land of history and tradition. Framed by the Arrábida Mountain, which highlights the historic buildings, Azeitão is a land of fertile land, yielding, in the grapes it produces, quality wines from the famous Wineries of José Maria da Fonseca and Bacalhôa, Alcube. The gastronomy is another of its pillars, highlighting the cheese and traditional sweets, such as pies and esses.
Nature has also given it the proximity of fantastic beaches, such as Portinho da Arrábida, Galápos, Galapinhos, Albarquel…
Just minutes away from Setúbal and Lisbon, it has attracted the attention of new residents who find here a quieter and more comfortable lifestyle.
HISTORY AND TRADITION
Witnesses of other times are found throughout the region, being a sublime place to remember past times, but with an eye to the future, since many of its historic buildings are one of the reasons for the tourism development of the region.
We highlight the Arrábida Convent, built in the 16th century. It was founded, more precisely, in 1542, when D. João de Lencastre, I Duque de Aveiro, gave the land to Martinho de Santa Maria frei franciscano. The Quinta and Palace of Bacalhoa, once owned by the Infante D. João son of King D. João I, and that today gives its name to one of the region’s wines. Quinta das Torres, the Comenda Palace, the Dukes of Aveiro Palace, right in the center of town, which will soon become a charming hotel.
Azeitão is filled with large farms and estates that belonged to leading figures of Portuguese society and that are revitalized by investors, who see here the potential for tourism.
NATURAL HERITAGE
The region of Setúbal and Azeitão is bounded by the Arrábida Mountains and the Sado River, which give them a unique landscape.
The Arrábida Mountain, characterized by Mediterranean vegetation, is home to numerous rare species of flora and harbors a diverse fauna. With an altitude that reaches 501 meters is characterized by its slopes, which give it spectacular natural viewpoints, where you can glimpse the mountains and the sea that runs at his feet.
In turn, the Sado estuary is one of the most beautiful bays in Portugal, giving the region unique beaches. From Sesimbra, to Setúbal, Tróia, the sands are countless and of a beauty that contrasts the blue of the Sado, with the reverberating vegetation of the mountain.
The most accessible beaches are Albarquel, Figueirinha and Creiro beach, Portinho da Arrábida and Gálapos, but on the coast between Cabo Espichel and Setúbal you will also find true treasures, some more accessible and others that make up for the short walk. We speak for example of Galapinhos – elected in 2019 “The Most Beautiful beach in Europe” by the European Best Destinations – or the Coelhos beach. In the direction of Sesimbra you will find Praia do Ouro and Praia da California, which already extend along the waterfront of the town of Sesimbra.
A short boat ride away, you will find the magnificent Bay of Troia, with extensive sandy beaches and wonderful dunes.
Azeitão also benefits from a climate and fertile land for growing vines, being a traditional land of wine producers. The vineyard landscapes as far as the eye can see are another of its characteristics.
FLAVOURS
As in the whole country, the region is no exception when it comes to sublime gastronomy.
We highlight of course the famous Tortas de Azeitão. But we also speak of the Esses, the Amores de Azeitão, Delícias. Exceptional sweets that you will find perfected in the centennial house Cego, a pastry of own production, in the main street of the village, Rua José Augusto Coelho.
We must also mention the Azeitão Cheese, with a characteristic and much appreciated flavor, produced in the municipalities of Setúbal, Sesimbra and Palmela.
With the Sado river around it, it is a region of fishermen, so the fresh fish and seafood abound. The sardines and the fried cuttlefish, very characteristic of Setúbal, stand out.
The wine and especially the Moscatel are another of the ex libris of the region, being the home of producers with their history linked to Azeitão, as the Bacalhoa wines and especially the house José Maria da Fonseca.
CLIMATE
Portugal and also the region of Setubal and Azeitão are characterized by a Mediterranean climate, with high temperatures in summer and mild in winter, ideal for the enjoyment of the numerous beaches that characterize the county.
Azeitão is the ideal place for family life. The children can still play outside and at the same time everything you need in terms of services is accessible and just a few minutes away.

HISTÓRIA E TRADIÇÃO
Testemunhos de outros tempos populam um pouco por toda a região, sendo um local sublime para recordar tempos passados, mas com um olhar sobre o futuro, já que muitos dos seus edifícios históricos são uma das razões do desenvolvimento turístico da região.
Destacamos o Convento da Arrábida, edificado no século XVI. Foi fundado, mais precisamente, em 1542, quando D. João de Lencastre, I Duque de Aveiro, cedeu as terras ao Frei franciscano Martinho de Santa Maria. A Quinta e o Palácio da Bacalhoa, outrora do Infante João, filho do Rei D. João I, e que hoje dá nome a um dos vinhos da região. A Quinta das Torres, o Palácio da Comenda, o Palácio dos Duques de Aveiro, mesmo no centro de Vila, que em breve dará lugar a um hotel de charme.
Azeitão é povoada de grandes quintas e herdades que pertenciam a figuras preponderantes da sociedade portuguesa e que são revitalizadas por investidores, que aqui denotam as potencialidades para o turismo rural e de habitação.
PATRIMÓNIO NATURAL
A Região da cidade de Setúbal e Azeitão é delimitada pela Serra Arrábida e pelo Rio Sado que lhes conferem um paisagem única.
A Serra da Arrábida, caracterizada pela vegetação mediterrânea, é lar de inúmeras espécies raras de flora e abriga uma fauna diversificada, sendo Parque Natural deste 1976. Com uma altitude que atinge os 501 metros é caracterizada pelos desníveis, que lhe conferem miradouros naturais espectaculares, onde pode vislumbrar as montanhas e o mar que corre aos seus pés.
Por sua vez, o estuário do Sado constitui uma das baías mais belas de Portugal, conferindo à região praias singulares. Desde Sesimbra, a Setúbal, Tróia, os areais são inúmeros e de uma beleza que fazem contrastar o azul do Sado, com a vegetação reverberante da Serra.
As praias mais acessíveis são a de Albarquel, da Figueirinha e a praia do Creiro, o Portinho da Arrábida e Gálapos, mas na costa entre o Cabo Espichel e Setúbal encontra também verdadeiros tesouros, umas mais acessíveis e outras que compensam em muito a pequena caminhada. Falamos por exemplo de Galapinhos – eleita em 2019 ”a praia mais bonita da Europa” pelo European Best Destinations – ou da praia dos Coelhos. Em direcção a Sesimbra encontra já a praia do Ouro e a praia da Califórnia, que se estendem já pela marginal da vila de Sesimbra.
A uma curta travessia de barco, encontra ainda a magnífica Baía de Tróia, com extensos areais e dunas maravilhosas.
Azeitão beneficia também de um clima err de terras férteis para o cultivo da vinha, sendo uma terra tradicional de produtores de vinho. As paisagens de vinhas a perder de vista são outra das suas características.
SABORES
Como em todo o País, a região não é excepção no que diz respeito a uma gastronomia sublime.
Salientamos claro as famosas Tortas de Azeitão. Mas falamos também dos Esses, os Amores de Azeitão, as Delícias. Doces excepcionais que encontrará aprimorados na casa centenária, de fabrico próprio Cego, na principal rua da vila, a Rua José Augusto Coelho.
Não podemos também deixar de referir o Queijo de Azeitão, com um sabor característico e muito apreciado, produzido nos concelhos de Setúbal, Sesimbra e Palmela.
Com o Sado ao seu redor, é uma região de pescadores, pelo que o peixe fresco e o marisco abundam. Destaca-se as sardinhas e o choco-frito, muito característicos de Setúbal.
O vinho e, em especial, o Moscatel são outro do ex libris da região, sendo a casa de produtores com a sua história ligada a Azeitão, como os vinhos da Bacalhoa e em especial a casa José Maria da Fonseca.
CLIMA
Portugal e também a região de Setúbal e Azeitão caracterizam-se por um clima mediterrânio, com temperaturas altas no Verão e amenas no Inverno, sendo ideal para o usufruto das inúmeras praias que caracterizam o concelho.
Azeitão é local ideal para a vida em família. As crianças ainda podem brincar na rua e ao mesmo tempo tudo o que necessita em termos de serviços é acessível e a poucos minutos.
